Punishment for the commoners included the following:
- Hanging
- Burning
- The pillory- A wooden or metal framework device stuck on a post. It had holes for the arms and head to poke through. People who received this punishment copped a lot of abuse from crowds.
- The stocks- This device is the same as the pillory with the only difference being that your legs, feet and wrist were also locked within wooden boards.
- Whipping
- Branding
- Pressing to death- Also known as crushing
- Ducking stools- The offender was strapped within an armchair and stuck upon a beam that acted like a seesaw above a stream or pond.
- The wheel- Also known as the breaking wheel was used to break the victim's bones
- Boiling in oil water or lead
- Starvation in a public place
- Chopping off various parts of the body
- The Gossip's bridle or the Brank- An iron muzzle within iron framework enclosing the head.
- The Drunkard's cloak- A wooden barrel that had to be worn by the offender
- Drowning
